Risks and Rewards of Self Demolition or Who Knew that was there?

As many of you know, or could easily guess, remodeling a bathroom or kitchen may seem like a job for the pros. Sometimes the next thought right after that is "we can save some money by doing the demolition ourselves". Both thoughts would be correct if given the right chance to place itself in your overall game plan.

We have all seen the countless TV shows where the homeowner or contractor dons safety equipment and picks up a sledge hammer swinging wildly at kitchen cabinets, walls or maybe even bathroom fixtures. This may look good on TV but before the cameras roll there was a plan something similar to this.

1) Consult a licensed contractor to research permitting and other logistics.

2) Review as built plans of the house or building to verify locations of plumbing, electric and any other unseen issues prior to taking action

3) Decide plan of action regarding levels of destruction vs removal of walls and fixtures, etc.

4) Safety first.

Knowing what is hiding behind the cabinets or within walls completed you may now swing away your all too large sledge hammer or gently remove fixtures as planned. Being confident that a wall being removed is not load bearing or that a pipe is waiting behind your next swing of the hammer is of considerable value. Without this you may accidentally break something resulting in the immediate loss of time and money you thought you were going to save by performing self demolition to your building or home.
